About the role
We are recruiting an experienced, engaging and highly knowledgeable Head Guide for an exceptional, privately operated VIP luxury wellness retreat in the Karoo.
This exclusive property comprises just ten expansive luxury tented suites, each measuring approximately 320m² and offering exceptional privacy, comfort and personalised service.
Each suite features its own private plunge pool, floating pool, Jacuzzi, spa facilities, minibar, room service and dedicated private concierge. Guests enjoy individually tailored wellness experiences, including personalised dining and dietary menus.
Set within a remarkable natural wilderness, the retreat is home to the Big Five, more than 100 bird species and extraordinary indigenous fauna and flora, including species unique to the region.
We are looking for a guide who understands that an exceptional wilderness experience is about far more than a Big Five sighting. The successful candidate will have the knowledge, personality and storytelling ability to bring the Karoo landscape to life, revealing the fascinating details of its ecology, birdlife, vegetation and natural history.
The Position
The Head Guide will be responsible for delivering two exceptional nature drives per day, ensuring that every outing is informative, engaging and memorable.
The property is situated in a remote area of the Karoo, with the nearest town approximately 45 minutes away. Candidates must be comfortable living and working in a secluded environment.
Where a company vehicle is travelling into town, staff are welcome to make use of the available transport arrangements.
- Conducting two professionally guided nature drives daily.
- Sharing an extensive knowledge of wildlife, birdlife, indigenous vegetation, grass species, ecology and the natural environment.
- Introducing guests to the distinctive landscapes and biodiversity of the Karoo and Eastern Cape.
- Creating engaging wilderness experiences through excellent storytelling, interpretation and genuine enthusiasm for the natural world.
- Ensuring that guests appreciate the smaller, often overlooked wonders of the wilderness, rather than focusing exclusively on sightings of large wildlife.
- Providing a highly personalised guiding experience suited to an exclusive VIP clientele.
- Maintaining the highest standards of guest safety, professionalism and guiding etiquette.
- Ensuring that guiding vehicles and equipment are properly maintained and presented.
What they're looking for
- Previous guiding experience within a premium five-star luxury safari lodge is essential.
- Extensive knowledge of Southern African wildlife, birdlife, indigenous flora, grass species and natural ecosystems.
- Knowledge of the Karoo and Eastern Cape regions will be highly advantageous.
- A confident, outgoing and engaging personality, with exceptional communication and storytelling skills.
- The ability to make even the quietest stretch of wilderness fascinating through knowledge, observation and enthusiasm.
- A genuine passion for conservation, ecology and the natural environment.
- An understanding of the discretion, professionalism and personalised service expected at an exclusive VIP property.
- Appropriate professional guiding qualifications and valid guiding credentials.
- Own transport is essential.
