About the role

Our client, based in Midrand / Menlyn, is looking for a Senior Operations Engineer / Senior DevOps Engineer / DevOps Lead to join their team on a contract basis until December 2029.

Knowledge:

• Strong expertise in configuration management tools (e.g., Ansible, Puppet, Chef, Salt)
• Proven automation skills using scripting and programming languages (e.g., Python, Bash, PowerShell)
• Deep knowledge of CI/CD pipelines and tooling (e.g., Jenkins, GitLab CI, GitHub Actions)
• Solid understanding of infrastructure as code (IaC) technologies (e.g., Terraform, CloudFormation)
• Experience with monitoring, logging and observability platforms (e.g., Prometheus, Grafana, ELK/EFK)
• Hands-on experience operating cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or equivalent)
• Expertise in change, release and transition management practices for IT services
• Strong troubleshooting and root-cause analysis skills for complex production incidents
• Excellent stakeholder communication and leadership skills for cross-functional teams
• Knowledge of IT service management frameworks (ITIL) and operational governance

Duties:

• Lead configuration management, DevOps and automation initiatives to improve production stability.
• Design and maintain Infrastructure as Code (IaC), CI/CD and automation pipelines for provisioning and deployments.
• Manage service transitions, releases and major changes, ensuring smooth handover to operations.
• Define and enforce IT operational processes, governance and change management standards.
• Act as an escalation point for major incidents, leading root-cause analysis, postmortems and corrective actions.
• Collaborate with infrastructure, development and security teams to ensure solutions are designed for reliable operations.
• Create runbooks, documentation and automation to reduce manual operational work.
• Monitor service performance, SLAs/OLAs and operational KPIs, driving continuous improvement.
• Support IT Service Continuity and business-critical systems.
• Provide knowledge transfer, onboarding and training on operational processes.
• Promote best practices, DevOps ways of working and continuous improvement across teams.
• Identify and implement AI tools and use cases to improve team efficiency and service quality.
• Work closely with international teams, stakeholders and external partners in an Agile/DevOps environment.
• Ensure application security, availability and integrity, using systematic problem-solving to resolve issues.

What they're looking for

• IT degree or equivalent qualification.
• Broad IT experience, typically 6-10 years, with 3–5 years in IT operations/operations management
• Proven experience in transition management, with relevant qualifications (ITIL Foundation and Service Transition or equivalent)
